Are Tea Eggs Healthy? (3 Tips for Weight Loss)

Tea eggs are a traditional and very popular Chinese food that is commonly eaten as a snack or appetizer.

It is known for its fragrant and savory taste with a dark and light brown marbled appearance.

Now the question is, are tea eggs healthy? Yes!

Tea Eggs are a great source of protein and contain the same benefits of eggs while offering additional flavors that come from cinnamon, bay leaves, soy sauce, star anise, and black tea. There is a minimal amount of sugar used in Tea Eggs which only make up for a small portion of its calories.

There are a couple things you should be doing and looking out for when you are trying to lose weight, so here are some tips on how to incorporate tea eggs into your weight loss journey.

  1. What goes into Tea Eggs and Its Calories

  2. How are Tea Eggs Beneficial for Weight Loss

  3. Importance of Working Out and Building Muscles

These following tips will be a solid base for understanding how to lose weight properly with good food.

How to Lose Weight When Eating Tea Eggs

While tea eggs are very healthy and can be eaten often, the amount of calories you consume in a day is still the main factor for if you lose weight or not.

Weight loss is a result of being in a caloric deficit.

What is a caloric deficit? A caloric deficit is when you consume less calories than what your body needs to maintain its current weight.

In order to figure out how many calories you need to consume in order to lose weight, you first need to figure out what your TDEE is.

TDEE, or Total Daily Energy Expenditure, refers to the amount of calories your body needs to maintain its current state.

Everyone’s TDEE is different.

TDEE is determined by a number of factors such as weight, height, gender, age, muscle mass, and activity level.

To calculate your TDEE, you need to figure out your BMR, or Basal Metabolic Rate, which refers to how many calories your body needs to survive at its current state.

When you figure out your BMR, you multiply it by your activity level which in turn will produce your TDEE.

This all sounds very complicated but do not worry, there are tons of sources online such as online calculators where you can figure out your TDEE just by plugging in some information.

These calculators might not be insanely accurate but they can help give you a very good idea of how many calories you should be eating in a day.

Now that you have figured out your TDEE, all you need to do now to figure out how to be in a deficit is simply just subtracting at least 100 calories from your TDEE and from there you will be in a caloric deficit.

As long as your total daily calorie intake is below your TDEE, you will be in a deficit and you will lose weight if you stay in a deficit for a certain amount of time.

The lower you drop your calories, the faster you will lose weight, but I do not recommend dropping your calories too quickly drastically.

Yes, you will initially lose a lot of weight but you will also stall in your weight loss rather quickly too.

Once this happens, the only way you will continue to lose weight is to drop it even lower which is bad for the health of your metabolism.

I recommend a slow and steady decrease of calories after a couple weeks and going no lower than 1,200 calories for females and 1,500 calories for males.

Tip 1: Understand What Goes into Tea Eggs

Tea eggs are a very simple snack.

They are basically hard boiled eggs that have been marinated by a masterfully flavored sauce.

The process of making tea eggs is very simple.

The most complicated process is probably the sauce itself because it consists of different spices and tea leaves.

First, the eggs are boiled.

Once they are cooked, their shells are made to be slightly cracked which is what lets the sauce seep through and produces the signature marbled appearance.

After cracking, the eggs are placed into a pot to simmer in the sauce, which is usually made up of soy sauce and a combination of spices such as cinnamon, star anise, fennel seeds, cloves, and Szechuan peppercorns.

Some add black tea leaves into the sauce but it is not necessary.

Once simmered, the eggs are then placed in another container with more sauce for it to sit and absorb even more flavor.

As you can see, tea eggs in its entirety is basically just a hard boiled egg that’s flavored and the flavoring barely contributes anymore calories to the egg itself.

So the calorie and nutrition content of tea eggs are exactly the same as regular hard-boiled eggs.

Tip 2: Understand How Tea Eggs Are Beneficial for Weight Loss

Tea eggs are great assets for weight loss.

As stated, tea eggs make a great snack that is not only healthy for you but also extremely flavorful and filling.

For only 70 calories per egg, you can eat up to four eggs in a day as an extremely filling and healthy snack.

If you want to reduce the calories even more and reduce your fat intake, you can also opt to only eat the egg whites which still hold most of the flavor and all the protein!

Just having the egg whites by itself and pairing it with fresh vegetables or fruits would make this one of the best snacks for weight loss because egg whites are only 17 calories and all protein.

The protein content of tea eggs also makes it beneficial for weight loss because a high protein diet is the ideal diet for optimal fat loss and muscle maintenance.

Why is high protein good for weight loss?

It is good for weight loss because protein has the highest thermic effect when compared to carbs and fats.

That means your body takes more energy to digest and absorb into your system which leads to a higher metabolism.

Protein also increases your metabolism by helping you maintain and build lean muscle mass.

It is important to cultivate and maintain as much lean muscle mass as possible because muscles are denser than fat meaning it requires more calories to maintain.

So the more muscles you have, the higher your TDEE and also more calories you can eat and still be in a deficit.

So not only do tea eggs make a healthy and delicious snack, they are a super diet friendly food and are extremely beneficial for weight loss.

Tip 3: Know The Importance of Working Out and Building Muscle

Cultivating muscles is one of the best things you can do for your overall health and metabolism.

As stated before, the more muscle mass the higher your metabolism which leads to an easier weight loss that is mostly going to be fat loss.

Not only is it beneficial for your health and metabolism, more muscles also equates to a better structured body.

Not only will your posture improve but also your over body composition.

Now that we know the importance of muscle we need to make sure we stay on track with our workouts.

Consistency and longevity are the two key factors when building muscle so there will be some commitment involved.

You can either go to the gym or build one for yourself.

It really just comes down to 3 pieces of equipment that you need to do most workouts.

These three are the workout bench, dumbbells, and gym flooring.

Check out our recommended gear page to see our best picks for these pieces of equipment here.

If a home gym is not for you then getting a membership somewhere works too.

As long as you are starting your muscle building journey, we’re happy!

Stick with it for the long run and you’ll see how amazing the results can be.

There you have it!

As you can see, tea eggs are a snack that is not only very delicious but you can incorporate it into your daily diet and still lose weight with no problem!

The process of making tea eggs is very simplistic and it does not contain anything unhealthy so the egg retains all its nutrients and caloric content.

With only 70 calories and a high protein content, it is totally fine to eat these on a daily basis.

But remember, just because it is healthy does not mean you can eat as many as you want!

It still contains calories and you still need to make sure you are in a caloric deficit at the end of the day to lose weight.

With any kind of food, moderation is always very important.

Now go enjoy those tea eggs! If you are craving them, go get it! They are healthy and guilt free.

Hey, if you crave them again tomorrow, go for it!

As long as you remember to log your calories and stay in a deficit, you will have no problem staying on a constant path for weight loss.
